One Whole Year

Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of the opening of Dainty Librarian.  As some of you know, my initial plan was the sell vintage clothing.  I spent the entire month of September scouring thrift store and estate sales in order to gather my inventory.  It only took two weeks after the opening for me to start making my own clothing and very quickly dropped the vintage clothes.

I remember being really uncertain of whether or not this was going to last.  I jumped in with little knowledge and hoped for the best.  Now, a whole year later, as I sit in my studio I'm so glad that I stuck with it.  Yes, there's been some tough times, ups and downs, just like anything else.  I've made some really awesome things, as well as a few mistakes, but I couldn't be more happy.  I know that if I hadn't moved to Austin this wouldn't have happened so I'm thankful that I did that as well.  I wouldn't say I'm wildly successful or that I really know what I'm doing, but I never would have known if I hadn't tried.

Thank you to everyone who has been so very supportive of the store and of me, I couldn't have done it without you!

Oh how my logos have changed!
The many banners I have designed.

My first batch of sweatshirts!

The Other Side of Things

I found these photos of mine and Robert's trip to Mt. Bonnell on his camera so I thought it would be nice to share his perspective.  Most of our photos were similar except that his had some of me.

Hanging by a Thread

Last week I decided that it was finally time to do something about that blank corner above our tv.  I had several ideas including a pinata or a bird cage, but came to the conclusion that I wanted to make something myself.  I came up with the plan to create a large hanging triangle from hot pink yarn and a stick that I picked up one night when we were walking home from a bar and drunkenly declared it my "walking stick."  I'm glad I could make find a use for it!

I'm so glad I got my hair cut, I didn't realize how bad it was until I saw these photos!
Just keep stringing!

Yay!  Doesn't it look fantastic?  It also rotates every so often depending on if the AC is on, which makes it even more interesting. Our little living room is really coming together, I'm set on getting some kind of coffee table, but I'm not in a hurry to get one.  What have you done to make your house/apartment/room/dorm feel more like your own?

Saturday Morning Special

My Other Two-Thirds

I am not just one
I am part of a group of three
together we are triplets
my two amazing sisters and me
we cant read each others minds
and we dont feel the others pain
we do share a special bond
one that keeps us mostly sane
we can annoy each other at times
but mostly we laugh a ton
we dont always share our things
yet we always share the fun
we've had some ups and downs
experienced victory and defeat
when we were in school
their scores were the ones to beat
they kept me striving for more
made me into a better man
led me to something I love
by becoming my biggest fans
I trust them with my actions
agree that they know me best
thats why they are so special
they help relieve my stress
without them this wouldn't happen
my poems would never be read
instead I would be writing nothing
ideas would stay in my head
this is why I must thank them
for being the best two-thirds
of any triplets in history
I can't express this with mere words

A very sweet poem by my darling brother, Alex

Love Letters

Even though living so far from my family and friends can be tough at times, one of my very favorite things is the glorious letters, cards, and postcards they send me.  I've collected a nice little stack (mostly postcards from my mom) of things people have sent me since I moved to Austin.  Here are a few that I've received in the mail sort of recently:
Postcard from Kelly :: Birthday card from my mom
Card from Missy :: Postcard from Sarah
Card from Sarah :: Card from Leanne the Aspiring Librarian

Cumulus and Cirrus and Nimbostratus, Oh My!

Have you heard of the Cloud Appreciation Society? Me neither, but it does exist and it's exactly what you think: a society formed for the appreciation of clouds, or as they put it "fighting the banality of 'blue sky thinking.'" I came across their book "Hot Pink Flying Saucers and Other Clouds" which showcases photographs of clouds that looks like fussili pasta, Salvador Dalí, skateboarders and oh so much more. What a brilliant idea. Their website is full of handy cloud identification information as well as lots of pictures, cloud videos, and cloud art.

A View from the Top

The other day, Robert and I decided to head up to Mt. Bonnell which I pronounce Bon-elle and of course the Texans call it Bah-nelle.  Anyway, it's a grueling hundred step walk to a wonderful look-out where you can see pretty much all of Austin and then some! Even though you only have to walk up stairs and Robert and I were joking about our treacherous mountain climb the whole way up, my calves were really sore the next day!

Look at that focus, so cute!

Dear Sandwich Maker,

Dear Wheatsville Sandwich Maker,

There are very few things in this world that are as amazing as a well made BLT.  I was terribly dissatisfied by your lettuce to tomato to bacon ratio.  Is this not a science?  Either way, you had it all wrong.  Don't you know that Bacon is the star of the show?
It is a BLT, ya know, not a TBL!

Sincerely,
A Serious Bacon Lover

Saturday Morning Special

How The World Came To Be

walking in circles
is like drifting into space
lost doesn't do justice
to the brains wander
direction has no meaning
up is now parallel
wake up from the dream
pretend there is no reality
time is not substantial
fear never saw existence
few tales of any life
spring up from underneath
this chasm became a hole
where doubt shows no light
freedom is but nothing
danger is a weakness
emotion rejects all comers
like is like a like
repeated without end
visions run away
faster than spoken word
only heard by past expressions
stay away from this place
it can trap all of them
be open to all theories
they make it sustainable
grasp all of the unknown
learn from past mistakes
failure is accepting without question
how the world came to be

Another great poem by my talented brother, Alex.
